In yesterdays 'pin-up' sessions it was suggested that I 'zone in' on one particular area of interest in regard to the automotive industry and focus all my research and concept sketching around that. After evaluating my options I feel like the ones that had the most scope were the recreational/camping and storage/organisation areas. I was having trouble deciding which one of the two to go forward with, so I thought, instead of limiting myself to one of these areas: why not instead look at a user group that implements elements both of these areas.
It was only when it was suggested to us to create personas for our PowerPoint presentation next week that it dawned on me which user group would be a great one to consider: families. Speaking from personal experience and from experiences shared by family and peers, a lot of families rely on their car for a lot of activities such as large family food shopping/grocery trips, commutes to and from school, afterschool activities sporting events and family holidays such as road trips or recreational camping holidays.
These days families are buying bigger cars to adhere to all these different uses including larger vehicles such as mini vans, RV's and caravans. What if there was a way to implement a car feature to help with what is needed for a family car rather than having to buy a specific vehicle that accommodates these features?
Family life can also be very stressful as parents not only have to care and cater for themselves but also their, often young, children. The Car People want us to create a product that will reduce stress in addition to being 'hassle-free' and I feel with families so often being rushed off their feet in situations such as the weekly food shop or the long road trip, they would appreciate a car feature that would illuminate this unneeded stress. What if we could create a car feature that would illuminate the stress in families everyday lives and special occasions?
After selecting my new and final subject area I can now work on:

After selecting my new and final subject area I can now work on:
- Researching into family road trips and recreational holidays
- Creating a new 'family car' based questionnaire
- Creating a specific, family-orientated persona
